Former UCLA Gynecologist Sentenced to 11 Years for Sexually Assaulting Hundreds of Patients

Dr. James Heaps, a former UCLA gynecologist, was sentenced to 11 years in prison for sexually abusing female patients over nearly a decade.
Heaps was convicted of sexually assaulting two patients and pleaded guilty to charges involving five other victims.
UCLA agreed to pay nearly $700 million to settle lawsuits from more than 500 of Heaps' victims.
Heaps continued to see patients at UCLA until June 2018 despite multiple reports of abuse.
His case is one of the largest sexual abuse scandals at a university and has highlighted major failures in oversight and protection of patients.
