Overview

  • Eguiagaray joined the Partido Socialista de Euskadi in 1977 and served on Bilbao’s city council and in the Vizcaya provincial assembly from 1979 to 1981.
  • He was appointed Minister of Public Administrations in March 1991 and later became Minister of Industry and Energy under Felipe González.
  • His Plan Prever initiative provided incentives to modernize Spain’s aging automotive fleet and remains a hallmark of his tenure.
  • After leaving government, he held advisory posts on boards such as EADS-CASA and led the Fundación Alternativas laboratory until 2010.
  • He was elected to the Congress of Deputies for Murcia in 1996 and re-elected in 2000, extending his influence in national politics.
