Former Sheetz CEO Steve Sheetz Dies at 77

Tributes from the family-owned chain credit him with steering its modern identity through decades of growth.

Stephen G. Sheetz, former president and CEO of Sheetz, Inc., died on Jan. 4 in Altoona at the age of 77. Steve and his brother Bob were raised in Altoona and launched the family-owned gas and convenience store chain that has now grown to more than 800 locations across six states.

Overview

  • The Altoona-based company said Stephen G. Sheetz died Sunday, Jan. 4, at UPMC Altoona at age 77, and he is survived by his wife, Nancy, two daughters, and seven grandchildren.
  • He served as president and CEO from 1984 to 1995, chaired the board through 2013, later led CLI Transport, and remained active on the family committee after retiring as an executive in 2020.
  • Starting at age 12, he helped grow the business from four stores to 100 by 1983, introduced Made-to-Order food and fuel sales, and set the course for a chain that now tops 800 stores with about 27,000 employees.
  • He and his wife founded the Sheetz Fellows Program at Penn State Altoona in 2009 and established the Sheetz Center for Entrepreneurial Excellence in downtown Altoona.
  • The company did not list a cause of death; local reporting cited respiratory complications following pneumonia treatment and noted a leukemia diagnosis dating to 2011.
