Former RAF Member Daniela Klette to Remain in Custody as Court Narrows Charges

German court rejects urgent suspicion of attempted murder but upholds charges of armed robbery and illegal weapons possession against the ex-RAF member.

  • Daniela Klette, a former member of the Red Army Faction (RAF), remains in pretrial detention following a review by the Celle Higher Regional Court.
  • The court ruled there is no urgent suspicion of attempted murder in a 2015 armed robbery, reducing the severity of that specific charge.
  • However, Klette is still strongly suspected of involvement in eight armed robberies between 1999 and 2016 across several German states, as well as illegal weapons possession.
  • The accusations stem from alleged crimes committed with two other former RAF members, Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg, who remain at large.
  • A decision on whether to proceed to trial is expected from the Verden District Court, with proceedings likely to begin in February 2025.
