Former Premier League Referee David Coote Pleads Guilty to Making Category A Indecent Image of a Child

Sentencing is set for 11 December after the judge ordered a pre-sentence report under conditional bail.

Overview

  • Coote entered the guilty plea at Nottingham Crown Court to the offence involving a Category A image, the most serious classification.
  • Nottinghamshire Police say the file was recovered in February 2025, and he was charged on 12 August after their investigation; he had initially denied the charge at a September hearing.
  • Court materials state the allegation concerns a video made on 2 January 2020, with “making” defined to include downloading, sharing or saving indecent material.
  • Judge Nirmal Shant KC granted conditional bail with restrictions including no unsupervised contact with under-18s, warning that a custodial sentence remains possible.
  • Coote had previously been dismissed by PGMOL in December 2024 over leaked comments about Jürgen Klopp and is serving a UEFA ban running until 30 June 2026.
