Former New Bedford Fire Chief Killed in Police Shootout

Paul N. Coderre Jr. was shot dead after opening fire on police outside a bar, following an altercation inside the establishment.

Former acting New Bedford fire chief Paul N. Coderre Jr. was shot and killed by police after he opened fire on them outside a local bar.
Coderre had been drinking for hours and was involved in a fight inside the bar that continued outside.
Police used non-lethal force to try to subdue Coderre, but these attempts were unsuccessful.
An Acushnet officer was wounded in the leg during the exchange of gunfire, but was treated and released from hospital.
The incident is under investigation by the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.
