Sandeep Lamichhane, Nepal's former national cricket team captain, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for rape.
The Kathmandu District Court also ordered Lamichhane to pay a fine of $2,250 and $1,500 to the victim as compensation.
The victim reported the sexual assault on Aug. 21, 2022, leading to Lamichhane's arrest and release on bail during the court proceedings.
Lamichhane's attorneys are likely to appeal the sentence.
Lamichhane was allowed to continue his cricket career during the trial, causing controversy and leading to some Nepalis disavowing the team.
