Former Mississippi Sheriff Admits to Lying in Federal Inmate Abuse Case

Terry Grassaree, the ex-sheriff of Noxubee County, pleaded guilty to making false statements about soliciting nude photos from an inmate.

  • Grassaree used his official position to request and receive explicit images from a female inmate via social media in 2019.
  • He provided the inmate with unauthorized privileges, including the use of a contraband cellphone and tobacco.
  • During a 2020 FBI interview, Grassaree falsely denied soliciting the photos, attempting to obstruct the federal investigation.
  • A federal grand jury indicted him on charges including wire fraud and record falsification; sentencing is set for August 2024.
  • Grassaree's deputy, Vance Phillips, also pleaded guilty to related bribery charges and is awaiting sentencing.
