Former L.A. Deputy Mayor Gets Probation for Fabricating City Hall Bomb Threat

Prosecutors describe the hoax as a stress-driven lapse rooted in mental-health struggles.

Overview

  • U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner sentenced Brian K. Williams to one year of federal probation, 50 hours of community service and a $5,000 fine.
  • Williams admitted he used Google Voice on his personal phone to call his city-issued phone during an Oct. 3, 2024 meeting and then falsely reported a bomb threat to LAPD.
  • He texted Mayor Karen Bass and senior officials quoting an alleged caller upset over the city’s support of Israel, and LAPD searched City Hall without finding any device.
  • Both sides told the court the act was driven by acute stress and mental-health issues, and prosecutors characterized it as an aberration rather than ideology.
  • The FBI searched his Pasadena home in December 2024; he initially denied making the call, later retired, and was replaced in April by former FBI official Robert Clark.
