Former Kandang Kerbau Hospital’s Three Blocks Named Singapore’s 76th National Monument

The designation confers the highest legal protection on the birthplace of over 1.2 million Singaporeans.

Overview

  • The National Heritage Board gazetted Blocks 1–3 at 1 Hampshire Road on Oct 1, the first new national monument since 2022.
  • The Land Transport Authority will remain on the premises until around 2030 as agencies review how to integrate the protected blocks with future housing plans.
  • A public exhibition, The Architecture of Care, opened on site and runs through Dec 31 with weekday access via registration at LTA security posts.
  • Block 2 was completed in 1933, Block 3 in 1940, and Block 1 in 1955 to Dr Benjamin Sheares’ design with tropical, climate‑responsive features such as concrete fins and cross‑ventilation.
  • The site’s medical legacy includes the 1966 "birth‑quake" record of 39,835 deliveries, Dr Sheares’ introduction of the lower‑segment Caesarean section, and the 1952 launch of the School of Midwifery.
