Charles Littlejohn, a former IRS contractor, has been sentenced to five years in prison for disclosing thousands of tax returns, including those of former President Donald Trump, without authorization.
Littlejohn was initially charged in September 2023 and pleaded guilty in October 2023 to unauthorized disclosure of tax return and return information, a violation of section 7213(a)(1) of the tax code.
From 2018 to 2020, Littlejohn stole tax returns and return information associated with a person referred to as 'Public Official A', who was later confirmed to be Donald Trump. He viewed Trump as 'dangerous and a threat to democracy' and intended to provide private tax information to the public.
Littlejohn disclosed the tax information to a media outlet initially described as 'News Organization 1' in documents, which appeared to be The New York Times. He also turned over returns and return information of thousands of the nation's wealthiest people to 'News Organization 2', which appeared to match reporting by Pro Publica.
Littlejohn was ordered to pay a fine of $5,000 and will also face three years of supervised release after his prison term.
