Former Gujarat Police Chief Sentenced for 1984 Assault on Congress Leader
A Bhuj court convicted ex-DGP Kuldeep Sharma and another officer for wrongful confinement and assault in a case that took 40 years to resolve.
- Kuldeep Sharma, former Gujarat Director General of Police, and ex-inspector Girish Vasavada were sentenced to three months in jail for their roles in a 1984 assault on Congress leader Mandhara Abdullah Haji Ibrahim.
- The Bhuj Sessions Court found the officers guilty under Indian Penal Code Section 342 for wrongful confinement, also imposing fines of ₹1,000 each.
- The case stemmed from a heated altercation at the Kutch SP office, where Ibrahim, accompanied by political leaders, was allegedly insulted, abused, and physically assaulted by Sharma and other officers.
- The legal battle spanned four decades, with delays and the deaths of two co-accused officers and the complainant's lawyer before the case reached its conclusion.
- Iqbal Mandhara, son of the late complainant, expressed satisfaction with the verdict, emphasizing the importance of accountability despite the prolonged delay in justice.
