Former GP Admits Poisoned-Wine Attempt to Kill Mother’s Partner

The former Sunderland doctor entered guilty pleas at Newcastle Crown Court, with sentencing fixed for 30 January.

Overview

  • Thomas Kwan pleaded guilty to attempted murder and to administering a noxious substance after sending tainted bottles to Patrick O’Hara via a fake wine club.
  • Prosecutors said he shipped between 18 and 21 bottles under the fictitious Northern Wine and Drinks Tasting Gentlemen’s Club, with two recovered bottles poisoned and evidence a third made O’Hara ill.
  • A bottle given by O’Hara to Torquil Gundlach was consumed, and Kwan admitted unlawfully causing the poison to be taken by him.
  • Kwan is already serving a life sentence with a minimum term of about 31 years for a separate attack in which he injected O’Hara while disguised as a community nurse, causing necrotising fasciitis; the toxin was identified as iodomethane.
  • Judges and prosecutors say the plots were financially motivated by an inheritance dispute; Kwan remains in custody at HMP Frankland and was struck off the medical register in September.
