Former Georgia Poll Worker Gets 20 Months for Bomb Threat to Elections Office

Prosecutors said he mailed a hoax threat while posing as a voter after a polling-place dispute.

Overview

  • U.S. District Judge Marc Treadwell sentenced Nicholas Wimbish, 26, to 20 months in prison, one year of supervised release, and a $2,000 fine on Sept. 18.
  • Wimbish pleaded guilty on Feb. 14 to conveying false information and making hoaxes in connection with a mailed threat to the Jones County elections office.
  • Court records say he argued with a voter on Oct. 16, 2024, then drafted and mailed a letter the next day impersonating that voter; the letter arrived Oct. 22.
  • The letter warned of violence against poll workers and included a handwritten note referencing a “boom toy,” which Wimbish admitted meant an explosive device.
  • Investigators found the letter on his computer, and he acknowledged lying to FBI agents; FBI Atlanta investigated and federal prosecutors emphasized protecting election workers.
