Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter Joins Husband in Hospice Care

Both Carters, married for 77 years, are now receiving end-of-life care at their home in Georgia.

  • Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, 96, has entered hospice care at her home in Georgia, joining her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, 99, who has been in hospice care since February.
  • Hospice care, unlike hospital care, is not curative and is designed to manage symptoms and assist patients as their lives wind down. It typically does not include 24/7 care.
  • Rosalynn Carter was diagnosed with dementia earlier this year. The Carters have been married for 77 years, making them the longest-married presidential couple in the U.S.
  • Hospice care can be given in an outpatient setting, such as a person's home, a nursing home, or a long-term care facility. The Carters are receiving care at their home.
  • The start of hospice care does not necessarily mean that the patient is merely days, or even weeks, away from death. It is often beneficial for the patient and the family to begin hospice care as early as possible.
