Despite her diagnosis, Rosalynn Carter continues to live at home in Plains, Georgia with her husband, former President Jimmy Carter.
Jimmy Carter, 96, has been receiving hospice care at their home since February according to the statement.
The Carter family hopes that sharing Rosalynn's diagnosis will raise awareness of mental health issues and the challenges of caregiving.
Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter have been married since 1946 and have four children, 22 grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
