Former Federal Police Official Luis Cárdenas Palomino Sentenced to 5 Years and 3 Months for 2012 Torture

The defense says it will appeal the ruling imposing a parallel ban on public office.

Overview

  • Judge Jesús Alberto Chávez Hernández found Cárdenas Palomino criminally responsible for authorizing and permitting torture to obtain information or a confession.
  • The case involves abuses against Mario Vallarta Cisneros, his nephew Sergio Cortés Vallarta, and Eduardo and Ricardo Estrada Granados following their April 27, 2012 detention in Iztapalapa.
  • The sentence bars him from holding public office for the same five years and three months that he must serve in prison.
  • Three former Federal Police agents — Horacio Parra Rubio, Marisela García Toledo and Fernando Valdez Aparicio — were also sentenced to four years in prison.
  • Cárdenas Palomino has been in custody since July 2021, his lawyers plan to appeal, and his term is projected to run through October 2026.
