Former DACA Recipient Dies After ICE Transfer to California Hospital, Prompting Investigations

The case intensifies scrutiny of medical care at the Adelanto detention center, with multiple inquiries now active.

Overview

  • ICE identified the detainee as Ismael Ayala-Uribe, 39, who was pronounced dead around 2:32 a.m. Monday at Victor Valley Global Medical Center in Victorville.
  • According to ICE, he was evaluated at Adelanto on Sept. 18, sent to the hospital on Sept. 21 for a buttock abscess, exhibited hypertension and tachycardia, was found unresponsive at 1:48 a.m., and could not be revived.
  • The cause and manner of death are under investigation by ICE and the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, and the Mexican Consulate is engaged with authorities and the family.
  • Ayala-Uribe was arrested during an Aug. 17 enforcement operation at an Orange County car wash and transferred to the Adelanto ICE Processing Center on Aug. 22 for immigration proceedings.
  • ICE records list him as the 14th person to die in agency custody this year, fueling concerns about conditions and medical care at Adelanto, a GEO Group–run facility long criticized by detainees and inspectors.
