Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar Convicted in 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots Murder Case

Delhi court finds Sajjan Kumar guilty of leading a mob that killed a father and son during the anti-Sikh riots following Indira Gandhi's assassination.

  • Sajjan Kumar, already serving a life sentence for another anti-Sikh riots case, has been convicted in the murder of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh in Saraswati Vihar on November 1, 1984.
  • The prosecution alleged that Kumar led a mob involved in looting, arson, and the killings, targeting Sikhs in retaliation for the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
  • The case was initially registered at the Punjabi Bagh police station but later reinvestigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which led to the framing of charges in December 2021.
  • The court found sufficient evidence to conclude that Kumar was not only a participant but also a leader of the mob responsible for the violence.
  • Arguments on the sentencing are scheduled for February 18, with the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee welcoming the verdict as a step toward justice.
