Former Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha has been placed under house arrest as part of an ongoing corruption investigation.
Berisha, who currently leads the opposition Democratic Party, is accused of abusing his office during his first term as prime minister to aid his son-in-law in privatizing public land for the construction of 17 apartment buildings.
Berisha's legal team plans to appeal the decision, which also bans any foreign travel.
Berisha has denied the allegations and accused current Prime Minister Edi Rama of carrying out political repression to silence the opposition.
Berisha was added to US and UK sanctions lists two years ago due to suspected corruption and links to organized crime, barring him from entering both countries.
