  • Former Alabama correctional officer Mohammad Shahid Jenkins has been sentenced to over seven years in prison for using excessive force on an inmate and lying in an official report to cover up his actions.
  • Jenkins, a former lieutenant and shift commander at the William E. Donaldson correctional facility, was found guilty of depriving inmate V.R. of his right to be free from excessive force by assaulting him multiple times while he was restrained and not posing a threat.
  • Jenkins pleaded guilty to the offenses on September 12 and was sentenced to 87 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
  • The inmate involved in the incident died nine days after the assault, but authorities have not yet labeled his death a homicide.
  • As part of the plea agreement, Jenkins also admitted to using unlawful force on another inmate on a separate occasion.
