Overview

• On August 11 a tiger that left Valmiki Tiger Reserve entered a sugarcane field near Ghoda Ghat and fatally mauled farmer Mathura Mahato
• A forest patrolling worker was attacked while recovering the victim’s body and has been treated at a local hospital where his condition is stable
• Coordinated teams employed drone surveillance, a baited trap and a tranquilliser dart to sedate and secure the animal within about 24 hours
• Veterinary examinations determined the roughly 12-year-old male tiger was severely anaemic and too weak to hunt wild prey
• Officials believe the animal originated in Nepal’s Madi forest and note rising tiger numbers in Valmiki Reserve have increased encounters in buffer zones
