Overview
- Hiker Anthony Pollio, who entered Glacier National Park on May 3, was killed after a grizzly surprised him on the Mount Brown Trail, the July 20 interagency report concluded.
- Investigators reconstructed a rapid encounter near a switchback blocked by downed timber, saying the bear charged uphill, followed Pollio downhill, and then re-engaged after Pollio climbed about 18 feet, inflicting fatal crushing bites to the head.
- DNA and field evidence identified the animal as a male grizzly at least 15 years old that lived in the park and had no known history of conflicts, captures, or aggression toward people.
- The report notes Pollio was hiking alone at night in poor-visibility terrain and that he discharged bear spray but investigators could not determine whether it struck the bear or was used effectively.
- The 17-page review by IGBC, the National Park Service and partner agencies marks Glacier’s first fatal bear attack since 1998 and is likely to shape park safety guidance on night hiking and the limits of deterrents.
