Foreign Worker Affiliations Reach Record 3.64 Million in Spain

A government regularization drive has added hundreds of thousands of newly registered workers, reshaping which sectors and nationalities make up the foreign workforce.

Overview

  • The number of foreign workers registered in Spain rose to 3,635,979, an increase of 84,220 from the prior month, setting a new peak in Social Security affiliations.
  • Over the past 12 months foreign affiliation grew by 547,637 workers, equal to an interannual rise of about 17.7%, according to Ministry data.
  • The extraordinary regularization process launched at the end of April is directly linked to 421,306 new Social Security registrations recorded through September.
  • Foreign workers now represent roughly 16.2% of all contributors and have supplied 52.3% of the jobs created since the 2022 labor reform.
  • Affiliates are concentrated in a few sectors—hospitality (33.7%), agriculture (30.7%), construction (27.9%), administrative activities (20.4%) and transport (18.8%)—and national groups such as Colombians (+53.1%) and Venezuelans (+20.9%) drove much of the recent growth, with implications for integration policies and Social Security financing.
