Foreign Secretary and Mexico City Mayor resign to seek nominations for historic run for presidency in 2024 election

  • Mexico's Foreign Relations Secretary resigned to enter the primary race for Mexico's 2024 presidential election.
  • Mexico City's Mayor resigned to enter the same primary race.
  • Both belong to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's Morena party, which will use polling to choose among four presidential contenders.
  • The other two hopefuls, Sen. Ricardo Monreal and Interior Secretary Adán López, are expected to resign or ask for leaves by the Friday deadline set by the Morena party.
  • Morena will conduct a series of five polls over the summer to decide the party's nomination for the presidential election on June 2, 2024.
