Ford Recalls Nearly 2 Million Explorer SUVs Over Detachable Trim Hazard

The recall, affecting models from 2011 to 2019, follows concerns that improperly engaged A-pillar trim retention clips could cause the trim to detach and pose a road hazard.

  • Ford Motor Company is recalling nearly 2 million Explorer SUVs from model years 2011 to 2019 due to concerns that the A-pillar trim retention clips may not be properly engaged, causing the trim to detach and potentially become a road hazard.
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) first notified Ford of the issue with the A-pillar trim retention clips in 2018, but the issue was initially judged as not an unreasonable safety risk.
  • The issue was revisited in 2021 and then again in February 2023, with Transport Canada also flagging the issue in August 2023.
  • There have been no known reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue, and Ford expects only 5% of the vehicle population to be affected.
  • Ford dealers will inspect and replace the affected part without charge, and owners will be notified by mail starting March 13, 2024.
