For Third Straight Week, Agents Use Tear Gas at Broadview ICE Protest

DHS links the Chicago-area crackdown, called Operation Midway Blitz, to more than 550 arrests.

Overview

  • Federal agents deployed tear gas, pepper balls and baton rounds Friday morning outside the Broadview ICE processing center to move crowds blocking facility access.
  • Protesters surrounded a black SUV associated with ICE, banged on its windows and threw plush toys as it slowly advanced toward an entrance.
  • Roughly 200 people gathered near 25th Street and Harvard Avenue, and at least one smoking canister was tossed back toward agents before the standoff eased.
  • A large metal fence installed this week around the facility remained in place despite demands from Broadview officials and the village fire department to remove it.
  • Illinois State Police and suburban departments including Oak Park and Hodgkins responded, closing stretches of 25th Street, and last week ten detained protesters were later released, according to the National Lawyers Guild.
