For First Time, Human Remains Found at La Perla in Córdoba

DNA testing by the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team will seek to identify the fragments recovered in an early phase of court-ordered excavations.

Overview

  • Investigators recovered a femur and cranial fragments in a sector known as La loma del torito during the first days of digging.
  • The remains were found dispersed rather than in an articulated grave, which complicates identification, and they were secured under federal court custody.
  • The EAAF will attempt DNA extraction and comparison with the national genetic bank to establish possible identities.
  • The search proceeds within a judicial case opened in 1998 after a complaint by Nobel laureate Adolfo Pérez Esquivel and relatives, with coordination among the federal court, prosecutors and the EAAF.
  • The operation spans the 3,200-hectare military property using aerial laser mapping and image-comparison techniques, the Army facilitated site access, and authorities requested that anyone with relevant information contact the court or the EAAF.
