Football Pitch-Sized Asteroid to Pass Earth on Friday, NASA Monitors Closely
Despite its classification as 'potentially hazardous', experts assure there is no risk of collision with Earth.
- Asteroid 2008 OS7, classified as 'potentially hazardous', is expected to pass Earth on Friday at a distance of 1.7 million miles, moving at a speed of around 11 miles per second.
- The asteroid, which is approximately the size of a football pitch, completes an orbit around the sun every 962 days and will make its closest approach at 2.41pm GMT on Friday.
- Although the asteroid will not enter Earth's atmosphere, its size and proximity to Earth have led to it being closely monitored by NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies.
- Despite the potential hazard, experts assure that there is no risk of collision with Earth.
- NASA's Osiris-Apex spacecraft is currently headed to study another asteroid, 99942 Apophis, which is expected to make a significant approach to Earth on April 14, 2029.
