Food Inflation Tops Headline in INDEC’s December Report

Seasonal fruit plus key beef cuts posted the steepest monthly gains, underscoring uneven price dynamics across the basket.

Overview

  • INDEC reported December inflation at 2.8% versus 3.1% for food, with 2025 closing at 31.5% annually against 32.2% for the food category.
  • Monthly movers were led by lemon (+31.2%), apple (+16.4%) and beef cuts such as asado (+13.5%), while tomato dropped 33.7% alongside smaller declines in onion, ham and potato.
  • Over 12 months, several beef cuts far outpaced the average—cuadril (+72.6%), paleta (+71.2%), nalga (+69.7%) and asado (+69.4%)—with notable rises in apple (+66.6%), ground coffee (+57.0%) and sunflower oil (+53.4%).
  • Rising food costs pushed basic basket thresholds higher: a family of four needed ARS 1,308,713 in December to avoid poverty, with the food basket at ARS 190,780 per person and the total basket at ARS 423,532.
  • Regional data showed Santa Fe’s inflation at 33% in 2025 with December food and drinks up 3.8%, while greater import openness helped hold down textiles and home equipment prices below the overall rate.
