Food Costs Lift January Inflation in Argentina to an Estimated 2%–2.5%

INDEC will publish the January result on Feb. 10 using new weights, with tariff changes starting to affect bills in March.

Overview

  • Private surveys report early-month increases led by vegetables, fruits and meats, with food the main driver of January’s price pressures.
  • LCG measured a 0.5% weekly rise in food and beverages for Jan. 7–14, with vegetables up 2.1% and accounting for 36% of the category’s increase.
  • Analytica and Eco Go recorded 0.8% weekly food gains and project January inflation near 2.3%–2.5%, based on Greater Buenos Aires tracking.
  • The government postponed a new electricity and gas subsidy scheme to February, so the impact on household bills will appear from March.
  • INDEC’s new CPI methodology increases the weight of rent and services and reduces the weight of food and clothing, as 2025 closed with 31.5% annual inflation and December at 2.8%.
