Food Basket Prices Fall Across Most Brazilian Capitals in September as Rio Branco Logs Fresh October Relief

Dieese’s benchmark minimum wage of R$ 7,075.83 highlights how far official pay trails the cost of basic needs.

  • The Dieese/Conab survey shows September declines in 22 of 27 capitals, with the steepest drops in Fortaleza (-6.31%), Palmas (-5.91%), Rio Branco (-3.16%), São Luís (-3.15%) and Teresina (-2.63%).
  • Rio Branco’s basket fell further in October, down R$ 50 to R$ 665.70 (-6.99%), with potato, rice and tomato cheaper and coffee, feijão carioca and pasta more expensive, according to Fecomércio-AC.
  • Tomato prices decreased in 26 of 27 capitals in September, with falls up to 47.61% in Palmas, while rice became cheaper in 25 capitals.
  • São Paulo posted the highest September basket cost at R$ 842.26, while North and Northeast capitals recorded the lowest values, led by Aracaju (R$ 552.65).
  • Using São Paulo’s basket as a reference, Dieese estimated a required minimum wage of R$ 7,075.83 for September, equal to 4.66 times the current R$ 1,518 minimum.
