Overview
- The fires that began with multiple ignitions on 12 and 13 July were officially declared extinguished on Friday, 28 August after weeks of monitoring by emergency services.
- Authorities estimate about 2,000–2,200 hectares burned, roughly 10% of the Fontainebleau massif.
- The massif has been reopened on about 80% of its area (around 18,000 hectares) but several sectors remain closed or limited for safety and repair work.
- Officials said firefighters’ operations combined with recent rainfall improved vegetation moisture and enabled a durably favorable situation.
- The prefecture and forestry service warned that most ignitions are human caused and urged visitors to follow rules such as staying on authorized paths and not smoking because the vegetation is still very dry.
