Foiled Assassination Plot in US Part of Larger Campaign of Killings
Indian National Charged in Plot, Links to Previous Killing in Canada Revealed
- US prosecutors have revealed a foiled plot to assassinate Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York, which was part of a larger campaign of planned killings in the US and Canada.
- The plot was organized by Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, who was directed by an unnamed official in the Indian government.
- The plot was discovered when Gupta, in search of a hitman, contacted a narcotics trafficker who was a Drug Enforcement Administration informant. The hitman turned out to be an undercover US agent.
- The indictment also links the plot to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh activist exiled from India, who was shot and killed in Surrey, British Columbia.
- Gupta was arrested in the Czech Republic at the request of the United States and is facing murder-for-hire and conspiracy charges.
