Flynn's legal defense fund was created in 2017 as he faced a federal investigation over the 2016 election, and the family reportedly pocketed hundreds of thousands of dollars from the fund.
Flynn, a retired US Army lieutenant general and Donald Trump ally, briefly served as the president's national security adviser and later pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI in 2017.
Flynn's brother and another sister-in-law are also suing CNN in a separate case still pending in New York federal court.
