Flu Wave Eases in Andalucía and Galicia After Christmas, With Uneven Declines

Regional health officials are keeping vaccination and mask measures in place pending clearer data after holiday reporting distortions.

Overview

  • Andalucía’s influenza incidence fell from 79 to 45.2 cases per 100,000 between December 22 and 28, with acute respiratory infection in primary care dropping to 299 per 100,000 from 475.1.
  • Galicia reported 343 hospital admissions for confirmed flu in the same week, down about 10% from 383, with the wave assessed as low intensity and decreasing.
  • The decline was not uniform: admissions rose 9.6% in Pontevedra-O Salnés and 8.5% in Vigo, which also posted the highest admission rates at 21.8 and 17.8 per 100,000 and elevated test positivity.
  • Authorities caution that holiday calendar effects may undercount activity and say the downward trend is not yet consolidated, noting the possibility of a short-term rebound.
  • Andalucía continues prevention measures with 1,881,411 flu vaccinations, 768,030 COVID-19 shots, 40,939 infants immunized against RSV, and mask rules tied to PAF activation, while Galicia recommends masks in health settings.
