Flour Prices Soar From South Punjab to Karachi as Wheat Supplies Stall

Millers request a fixed daily release from Punjab reserves to stabilize prices.

Overview

  • Open‑market wheat is quoted at Rs4,500–4,600 per 40kg, lifting flour to about Rs130 per kg and roughly Rs1,300 for a 10kg bag in South Punjab.
  • Government flour at official rates of Rs910 for 10kg and Rs1,820 for 20kg is reported to be scarce outside Lahore.
  • The Flour Mills Association says trader and household stocks are depleted and mills in Rahim Yar Khan are not receiving their allotted government wheat.
  • The association reports about 80% of mills have operated at a loss for two years and seeks a release of 20,000–22,000 tonnes daily from Jan 20 to Mar 20, appealing to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
  • In Karachi, millers cite Sindh government delivery delays and warn prices could climb further, with fine flour possibly reaching Rs145 per kg as the commissioner prepares a new price list.
