Overview

• The 27-year-old woman was fatally struck around 9:54 p.m. on Aug. 10 after she stepped onto Brooksville’s Hexam Road to check on an injured opossum beside her stopped Toyota Camry.
• A 19-year-old man from Weeki Wachee driving a Chrysler 300 collided with the woman after her husband pulled over to assist the animal.
• The victim was transported to a local hospital where she later died and officials confirmed the opossum also succumbed to its injuries.
• The Florida Highway Patrol says the crash remains under active investigation and has not released the woman’s identity.
