Florida Woman Charged with Manslaughter, Not Murder, in Shooting Death of Black Neighbor

Florida officials declined to file murder charges against a woman accused of shooting and killing her neighbor through a closed door.
Susan Lorincz, a white woman, was charged with manslaughter and assault for fatally shooting Ajike Owens, a Black mother of four, during a dispute over Owens's children on June 2.
Lorincz claimed she shot in self-defense after Owens knocked on her door and threatened to kill her, but witnesses reported hearing racial slurs before the shooting.
Owens's family and community members demanded Lorincz be charged with murder due to the racial slurs, but prosecutors said there was insufficient evidence to prove hatred, spite, ill will or evil intent.
The case has intensified debate over "stand your ground" laws and racial injustice in the criminal justice system.
