Overview

  • Edward Zakrzewski, convicted of the 1994 machete murders of his wife and two children, is set to die by three-drug lethal injection at Florida State Prison near Starke today at 6 p.m.
  • His final appeal was rejected Wednesday by the U.S. Supreme Court, clearing the way for the execution under a warrant signed this month by Gov. Ron DeSantis
  • This execution will mark Florida’s ninth of 2025, surpassing its previous modern-era annual high of eight and placing the state ahead of every other in the nation
  • Florida has two additional executions scheduled: Kayle Bates on August 19 for a 1982 murder in Bay County and Curtis Windom on August 28 for a 1992 triple homicide in Orange County
  • The accelerated pace of death warrants in 2025 has drawn criticism from faith leaders and legal experts over jury voting rules, racial disparities and the risk of wrongful convictions
