Florida Surfer Dies After Hitting Sandbar and Pier

Jorge Alvarado, 49, was surfing near Sunglow Pier in Daytona Beach Shores when he struck a sandbar and a pier piling.
Alvarado was placed on life support following the accident on Friday, September 13, and passed away on September 18.
Friends and bystanders worked for several minutes to free him from beneath the pier before he was rushed to the hospital.
A GoFundMe page set up to support Alvarado and his family raised over $14,000 before his death was announced.
Alvarado was remembered by friends as a vibrant and beloved figure in the Volusia surf community.
