Florida Spearfisher Survives Bull Shark Mauling With Only Flesh Wound

Prompt first aid on board followed by paramedics meeting him at the dock ensured the injury stayed limited to a flesh wound

Overview

  • Chance Armand was attacked by an 8-foot bull shark about 20 miles off Pensacola Pass while spear-fishing
  • He initially felt only pressure when the shark clamped down on his leg and then swam back to the boat
  • His friends used a t-shirt, a speargun band and a fillet knife to fashion a makeshift tourniquet and stop the bleeding
  • First responders met the vessel at the dock and transported him to a hospital where scans confirmed no bone, tendon or artery damage
  • He was released from the hospital in under 24 hours and said he will carry a first-aid kit and tourniquet on future dives
