Florida Reports Over 6,000 Immigration Arrests as 4-Day Central Florida Sting Nets About 350

ICE delivered more than $38 million in reimbursements as Florida awaits a Sept. 30 FEMA decision on funding for the Everglades detention site.

Overview

  • Officials said a multi-agency operation in Brevard and Central Florida detained about 354 people over four days, with local authorities reporting at least 150 deportations so far and the effort still underway.
  • ICE announced roughly $28 million for state agencies and more than $10 million for local departments from a $1.7 billion national allocation to support 287(g) partnerships.
  • Florida officials say more than 4,700 officers have been deputized under 287(g), and the Highway Patrol now fields full-time troopers dedicated to immigration enforcement.
  • State authorities said detainees from the operation will be processed and sent to the Everglades compound known as Alligator Alcatraz or other federal facilities before removal.
  • FEMA has yet to rule on Florida’s request to reimburse costs for Alligator Alcatraz, which reporting places at a minimum of $245 million, as lawsuits and civil-rights concerns continue, including reports of at least two wrongful arrests of U.S. citizens.
