Florida Jury Convicts Ryan Routh of Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump

The Justice Department cast the verdict as a stand against political violence.

Overview

  • Jurors found Routh guilty on five federal counts, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, using a firearm to commit a violent crime, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
  • After the jury left the courtroom, Routh attempted to stab himself in the neck with a pen before marshals intervened and removed him, according to reports from inside the court.
  • Sentencing is set for December, and prosecutors noted the convictions could carry a life sentence.
  • Routh represented himself at trial, called three witnesses, chose not to testify, and drew repeated admonishments from Judge Aileen M. Cannon over his conduct.
  • Prosecutors said Secret Service agents arrested him on Sept. 15, 2024 at Trump’s Florida golf club after finding him hiding with a semiautomatic rifle, arguing he sought to take the decision away from voters.
