Florida High School Fined $16,500 for Violating Transgender Sports Ban

Transgender student barred from school sports for a year, school placed on probation following violation of state's Fairness in Women’s Sports Act.

  • Monarch High School in Florida has been fined $16,500 and placed on administrative probation until November 2024 for allowing a transgender girl to participate in the girls' volleyball team.
  • The transgender student, who has been on hormone blockers since age 11 and started taking estrogen at age 13, has been barred from playing on any school team for one year.
  • The school's principal and other staff members were reassigned during the investigation, and the school must now host an 'Eligibility & Compliance Workshop' before June 2024.
  • Florida's Commissioner of Education, Manny Diaz Jr., praised the decision, citing the state's Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2021, which made it illegal for transgender girls and women to play on school sports teams for women and girls.
  • The student's mother, Jessica Norton, accused the state of outing her daughter and thanked the local community for their support.
