• On Aug. 16 at Cayo Costa near Boca Grande, Shawn Meuse was bitten on the leg while posing with a roughly 6-foot lemon shark caught during a birthday fishing trip.
• Video shows the shark thrash and clamp onto his leg as friends applied a tourniquet; Boca Grande Fire crews located the group around 10:55 p.m.
• He was airlifted to Gulf Coast Medical Center, had surgery scheduled for Aug. 19, and is expected to make a full recovery.
• The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission notes lemon sharks are protected in state waters and says it is investigating the incident.
• Local officials highlighted that tarpon season draws sharks into shallow water; from his hospital bed Meuse vowed to return to the beach, telling the shark, “See you next time.”
