Florida Corrections Officer Killed in Targeted Shooting Outside Home

Deputy Basil Powell, a 39-year-old corrections officer with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, was killed in a targeted shooting on Monday night.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. as Powell exited his vehicle outside his home in the 1400 block of NW Avenue D, Belle Glade.
Authorities have confirmed the attack was not related to Powell's role as a corrections officer but have not disclosed further details about the motive.
Powell was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
A ceremonial escort honored Powell, with law enforcement and civilians paying tribute as his remains were transported to the medical examiner’s office.
