Florida Board of Governors Bans State Funding for DEI Programs in Public Universities

The decision aligns with a law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis last year, and is part of a broader national trend targeting DEI programs in higher education.

  • Florida’s Board of Governors has voted to ban state spending on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs across all public universities in the state.
  • The decision affects universities including the University of Florida, Florida State University and Florida International University, bringing them in line with legislation signed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in May 2023.
  • State universities will not be able to use any state or federal funds to promote, support or maintain any programs or campus activities that advocate for DEI or engage in political or social activism.
  • The board also replaced the core course 'Principles of Sociology' with a general American History course 'Introductory Survey to 1877.'
  • This move is part of a broader trend across the country, with more than a dozen state legislatures introducing or passing bills to rein in DEI programs in colleges and universities.
