Alligators can reach 14 feet in Florida, the state says. A trapper was being sent to track down the alligator (not the one pictured) that attacked the woman in Martin County.

Overview

  • The 27-year-old woman and her boyfriend took their boat to the South Fork River near SW Linden Street shortly before 8 p.m. on July 23 when the alligator attacked in waist-deep water.
  • Deputies say the reptile bit her hand and wrist, briefly pulling her underwater before releasing its grip.
  • Martin County Fire Rescue and the sheriff’s marine unit responded and flew her to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where she was treated for broken bones and lacerations and reported to be stable.
  • The woman’s boyfriend and their dog were not harmed during the incident.
  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission dispatched a licensed trapper who has not yet captured the gator and will continue removal efforts.
