Overview

  • Overnight storms dumped 4 to 8 inches of rain across parts of northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana, leaving standing water on roads and in low-lying areas, the National Weather Service said.
  • Flood warnings and advisories remained in effect early Tuesday for multiple counties and were expected to expire around 10:30 a.m., with lingering showers shifting east later in the morning.
  • The most persistent downpours targeted areas between I-80 and I-88, with significant flash flooding in Paw Paw, Mokena and Whiting and localized totals of 7.3 inches in southern DeKalb, nearly seven in Hammond and more than six in Tinley Park.
  • Flooded streets left vehicles stranded in communities including Gary, Hammond, East Chicago and Lockport, basement flooding was reported, and the rain forced the Cubs–Brewers game to be rescheduled as a split doubleheader Tuesday.
  • Forecasters cautioned up to an additional inch of rain could fall and slow drainage before a transition to more comfortable conditions later this week.
